Silent House Movie Review

In recent years, the horror genre has become a familiar parade of startling jumps and characters with shaky psychological dispositions. Little about new film “Silent House” differs from the new genre norm, but the film isn’t trying to be innovative in plot points, but in technique. The problem with the film’s grand technical ambitions is that it only partially fulfills them.

“Silent House” is an English-speaking remake of the 2010 Spanish film “La Casa Muda” and stars Elizabeth Olsen (who broke into the movie business with her praiseworthy performance in “Martha Marcy May Marlene” last year) as Sarah, who is helping her father and uncle to fix up their old vacation home to sell. In the process, Sarah is left alone in the large, dark house as mysterious figures begin to stalk and taunt her. The problem with the plot is that it relies on familiar tropes and a “twist ending” that any rational person can see coming from almost the beginning of the film.

“Silent House” has been marketed as an hour and a half single take film with no edits. The filmmakers (Chris Kentis and Laura Lau) keep the camera focused on Olsen’s character throughout the film, giving you a sense of claustrophobia and the opportunity to experience the character’s terror first-hand. Olsen’s acting skill is truly what keeps this movie afloat: in the first ten minutes, the acting of her costars Eric Stevens and Adam Trese combined with the handheld camera work makes the movie feel amateurish.

The single-take idea is wonderful in theory: the movie happens in real time, and watching Olsen’s reactions give you a real sense of terror, even if the character makes some questionable choices. The facts have arisen that it was shot in rough ten-minute segments, and then edited to hide the cuts. If the plot of the film could stand on it’s own without relying on the marketing and filmmaking ploy of a single continuous shot, this would have been just fine. Although the bulk of the movie rests on Olsen’s very capable acting, the rest of the film leaves something to be desired.

Trayvon Martin Police and Incident Reports Released

The incident records surrounding the fatal shooting of Travyon Martin last month by a community watch volunteer have been released. Since there is still an ongoing police investigation, the Sanford Police Department has limited information, but Chief Bill Lee Jr. has stated, “The death of anyone due to violence, especially a 17-year-old young man, is morally appalling.”

The details of the original incident are still under debate, but the transcripts for the initial 911 call that George Zimmerman, the community watch volunteer involved in the shooting, placed to the Sanford Police Department and the police report have both been released.

According to Zimmerman in the 911 transcripts, Martin, a 17-year-old African-American male, was “just walking around, looking about.”

Zimmerman then described Martin to the dispatcher and followed Martin until the dispatcher told him “we don’t need you to do that.”

Zimmerman also stated things like, “These assholes they always get away,” and “This guy looks like he’s up to no good, or he’s on drugs or something.” Zimmerman held a concealed weapon permit issued by the State of Florida.

The official police report describes that two officers, Ricardo Ayala and Timothy Smith were dispatched around 7 p.m. to the Sanford neighborhood in reference to a complaint about a suspicious person and received calls about gunshots being fired.

Zimmerman’s official statement, according to Chief Lee, was that “he had lost sight of Trayvon and was returning to his truck to meet the police officer when he says he was attacked by Trayvon.” When police arrived, they investigated to find Martin without a pulse in the grass. The officers then removed Zimmerman’s handgun and placed him in police custody.

University Hosts Olympic Memorial Exhibition

By Colton Stanger

The J. Willard Marriot Library at the University of Utah will host a free Olympic Experience Exhibition during the month of February, commemorating the 10-year anniversary of the Olympic games held in Salt Lake City.

The collection is located on the fourth floor of the library and is a multi-media exhibit.  The collection includes thousands of documents, hours of video, books and magazines centered on the games and tens of thousands of photos.  The records are organized from the early attempts to secure the games to the games themselves.

The Special Collections Department has asked members of the community to donate any pictures or memorabilia they might have.

“We’d love to see more donations from the public,” said Roy Webb, multimedia archivist at the library.

The exhibition is focused at the university, which hosted the opening and closing ceremonies and housed the athletes in what are now the student dorms.  This makes the university the ideal center of the Exhibitions.

Other events in the city include month long exhibitions at the Alf Engen Ski museum and a photographic display at the Kimball Art Center, both located in Park City.  There is also a one-day display at the Gateway Center Grand Hall on February 18.

ABOUT ME:

I am a 21-year-old junior at the University of Utah, double majoring in Psychology and Communications, and I am expected to graduate Spring 2013. My goals after I receive my undergraduate are to attend graduate school and receive a Ph.D in Developmental Psychology, so that I can eventually either become a professor or open my own clinical practice.

Individual differences and what makes a person who they are have been points that have always interested me, and Developmental Psychology addresses these things. Developmental Psychology is a field of study that tracks psychological, emotional and perception changes in human beings over a lifetime, and includes issues of aging, identity formation, adolescence, cognitive development and social contexts.

Community involvement has always been important to me, and I believe that we should all contribute to the world around us somehow. I work as the Office and Volunteer Assistant at the Utah Pride Center, working closely with development and fundraising, event planning and the volunteers. I have volunteered in various capacities over the years, and I am currently on the Steering Committee of the Utah Pride Festival for the third year, as well as volunteering at The Sharing Place and Summer Twilight Concert Series in downtown Salt Lake City.

ABOUT ME:

I am a hoosier born girl from Indiana, which is most likely the culprit of my love for large quantities of Orville Redenbacher popcorn.  I am a junior at the University of Utah and an applicant for a Bachelors of Science in strategic communication.

Having lived at the base of Mt. Olympus in Salt Lake City for most of my life I enjoy being outside specifically in running, hiking or biking in the mountains. To this day my claim to fame would probably be that I completed the Layton City Marathon in 2010.

When I was 18 years old I spent time abroad, doing humanitarian work in Peru.  This experience helped me realize  the potential within each of us to make a difference. When I graduate in December 2013 I hope to work within the non-profit sector in a public relations.  I can’t think of a better career option than one that primarily focuses on the promotion of a group that is trying to make a difference. As Helen Keller once said, “I am only one but still I am one.  I cannot do everything but I can do something…” With my degree I hope to find that something I can do.

ABOUT ME:

My name is Bradley Hunsaker and I am an atmospheric science major here at the University of Utah.  I have been going to the U about two and a half years now which will put me somewhere in the Junior range I guess.  I transferred originally from Northern Virginia so that kinda messed with my credit system.  I was born and raised in Northern Virginia and lived there for a good 19 years never moving once.  I say Northern Virginia because I grew up about 20 miles outside of Washington D.C. in a small city not many have heard of called Woodbridge.  Honestly it is just easier to say Northern Virginia or D.C. when people ask where I am from.  I did spend two years on a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the midlands of England and southern Wales.  Mostly my mission was centered around Birmingham but we were spread all across the middle of the country.

To be honest, I am not a huge news writer, I mostly took this class to expand my skills in hopes that it would help get me into a broadcasting or news field if that is where I want to go with my degree.  Mostly I want to be a researcher or better yet a storm chaser.  Either way, I thought news writing could help so I took the class.  Plus it fulfilled a technical elective so I am not complaining.  Telling them I was taking news writing classes did help a bit in getting an internship with Fox News next summer.  So yeah, that is me.  Enjoy my articles, especially the turkey leg one, I liked writing that one the best.  Although my strength seems to be in fake obituaries.  Last thing, always remember to KISMIF (Keep It Simple, Make It Fun), and you can’t go wrong in life.

About Me:

The first thing you may want to know about me is how to pronounce my first name, Aodhan. You wouldn’t be the first to wonder the correct pronunciation, which is simply AI – d eh n, it’s Celtic in origin, but now onto more important things.

I am 21-years-old and in my last undergraduate semester at the University of Utah. My degree will be a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication. I completed my Associates of Science degree while in high school and was able to garner a scholarship to attend the University of Utah. I’m contemplating furthering my education with a law degree, but have yet to make that decision.

I’ve lived in Utah for around nine years, having lived in Washington State and Montana previously. I’m an avid outdoors enthusiast with my main interests being snowboarding and cycling. I’ve worked in the outdoor and alternative sports industry with companies such as backcountry.com and Zumiez inc. My personal experience and knowledge of the industries really helped me excel with these companies.

I’m very excited to be graduating and look forward to further developing my skills professionally.

I am a senior at the University of Utah currently in my last semester of college. As a communication major with with a minor in design, I hope to graduate as a well-rounded individual and enter the working world as an interior designer.

I found my love for interior design while interning for a local design firm: AMB Design. I have always loved creating, and find comfort in the home, so interior design quickly became the perfect fit for me.

Upon graduating in May 2012 my husband and I will be moving to Portland, Oregon where he will be working as in-house counsel for an architecture firm. My hope is to bring my experience with interior design to Portland by either working for a locally based firm or venturing out and starting my own design company.

ABOUT ME:

Born to highly educated parents, completing college was always a high priority for me.  Faced with the decision to have my second child or finish my degree, I chose the former with the intention of getting back to school when my youngest child started school full time.  In the summer of 2010, I walked into the first classroom I had been in almost 12 years.

I am currently completing a double major in political science and communications with a minor in campaign management.  My expected graduation date will be Fall of 2012.  Already having real world experience in the fields of political campaigns and public relations, has been extremely helpful in completing my coursework.  Working full time on a major political campaign, as a communications director and being a single mom to three, has poised a challenge, but will ultimately result in a better lifestyle for my family.

Utah police team with FBI to battle against gang membership

Story and slideshow by MARISSA HUNTSMAN

Salt Lake Valley is home to more than a top university; gang membership is at a peak within the valley with more than 50 active gangs, according to Salt Lake City Police.

According to the Salt Lake City Police website, 13 city police departments have teamed up with the FBI to form two task forces that are charged with formulating a plan to combat this growing problem.

Many residents of the Salt Lake City Valley remain unaware of the far-reaching effects of the gangs within the mountain ranges. However, many of these gangs are not from here.

Instead Salt Lake City is dubbed a “Secondary Gang City”  by the Metro Gang Unit, due to the national nature of the gang as stated by the Safe Street Violent Crime Initiative issued by the FBI. The major gangs with influential ties with California include the Sureños and Norteños.

One approach that police are doing is the creation of unified task forces that combine the representatives from local and state agencies along with the FBI. This is a new organization to hit the state of Utah but is not for the rest of the nation. Due to incredible results in other areas of the nation, the unique gang plague that afflicts this state could benefit from a long-term, proactive task force.

Just as with any aspect of the Salt Lake Valley, there is a great diversity of the membership of the gangs. According to the Metro Gang Unit website, not all of the gangs are organized by race or ethnicity. So the task forces also watch for groups such as the motorcycle gangs the Barons and Sundowners.

The Safe Streets Gang Task Force “involves the combined efforts of local and federal resources,” said Task Force Commander Richard Brede in an interview.

With recent efforts resulting in arrests and seizure of heroin, marijuana, methamphetamine and cocaine, the Safe Street Gang Task Force is making headway in the fight against the drug trade within the state.

An important aspect of the task force is the ability of Brede’s 17 officers to go anywhere in the Valley to investigate gang crime. This mirrors the ability of the gang members in Utah who travel from one area to another.

This is a recent change that is allowing residents to witness that the police are working against the gang crime in their neighborhoods.

The effectiveness of this task force is evident in the application of avoiding duplication during an investigation. Time is not wasted explaining the circumstances to police officer after police officer. The process has been streamlined, providing for a seamless application to solve drug crimes, according to the FBI website.

Another advantage of FBI involvement is the experience that the FBI brings to the situation due to its nature of investigating organized crime. According to Brede, street gangs have steadily been increasing their ability to remain under the radar.

Another common trend being observed regarding membership in Salt Lake Valley gang organizations is the recruitment of members young enough to be attending high school. With gang members walking the hallways of schools, the availability of drugs to teens has never been greater.

“The most common drugs I catch students with are marijuana and cocaine,” said Officer Lyman Smith, the resource officer at  West High School in Salt Lake City. Students are often caught in their cars, school restrooms, or behind churches.

Smith states that catching students using or dealing involves a constant officer presence around the school. Constant hall monitoring during classes by the school’s security team assists with keeping the drugs out of the school.

On the other hand, Resource Officer Thurston, who works at Lone Peak High School in Alpine, states that the majority of tips regarding drug deals and students using comes from fellow students.

Students involved in illegal activity brag to their peers about their newest purchase. Word travels through the grapevine and it eventually surfaces on Thurston’s radar.

These types of anonymous tips have assisted Thurston and the American Fork Police with recent arrests of students meeting in the wooded area behind Lone Peak High School.

The difference between these two schools is evident due to the culture of each school. West High School is known as a school that has many members of multiple gangs walking its hallways. The students at this school are aware of this and do not bring unwanted attention to themselves.

On the other side, the culture of the Alpine school is one in which gangs is not a familiarity and thus the culture allows for students to report crimes they see or hear about in class.

Once these students have been caught by the officers, they are cited and both schools suspend students for a period of time based on the number of occurrences per student.

Much of the information regarding teen gang and/or drug involvement stems from the information learned through the resource officer at local high schools. “These officers are the front men on the battlefield,” Brede said. “They provide necessary information that cannot be gained through other means.”

After the citation has been issued, the Metro Gang Unit steps in to provide support for the teen. The unit’s current movement against gangs is the Salt Lake City Gang Project, which police forces are using to decrease the presence of gangs especially within the school system. However, the task force runs into difficulties when convincing a teen to return to high school rather than make hundreds in one night selling drugs, said detective Nate Clark in an interview with the Deseret News.

This unit features a three-pronged approach when dealing with gangs: prevention, education and suppression, said Detective Thomas Loevlie of the MGU. The last five years have featured the unit focusing on prevention and education. The main direction of education is focused toward young children beginning in fourth grade through programs such as D.A.R.E.

Education is also directed toward the parents of these children. “The media and general public blame bad parenting for the rise in gang activity,” Loevlie said. The unit educates parents to get involved with their children. An involved parent is another layer of protection for the child.

The approach is very different from that of past police forces. It features building a rapport with the teen. Spending more time interviewing the teen offenders and understanding why they have turned to gangs and/or drug involvement.

“Teens have perfected the methods they use to hide gang involvement from adults but this combination of agencies brings new methods to stop and identify gang members,” Loevlie said. “Allowing us to step in and educate the teen.”

Elm Productions presents Zigga and Bentley, rapping is their BIZ

Story and slideshow by HALEE CRAM

Many success stories in today’s world start out small. This one began with the idea to turn a pigeon coop into a photo booth.

Elm Productions started in the back of a house in Cottonwood Heights. Chase Reed and Evan Moore knew they wanted to do something big and weren’t afraid to use any resources at their disposal. Reed suggested that this photo booth idea evolve into a recording studio.

The two of them worked hard cleaning and reconstructing to create a place where they could follow their dream. The recording studio was finished in a little over a month and that’s when the real work began.

“From there we decided we wanted to be a production company,” Reed says. “Production to us meant everything from music, to merchandise, to events, to photography. Literally everything. Cut out the middle man.”

Reed and Moore put their thoughts into actions and started working with a few artists around the Salt Lake Valley, funding their projects. Their first show was Dec. 4, 2010, at In the Venue. It showcased Cunninglinguists and DL Incognito and was an all-ages concert. The producers’ main focus has always been to have all-ages everything.

They believe if they can get the younger crowds to their shows, they will establish audiences for their artists from the roots up and perpetuate their own business. Another core belief for Reed and Moore? No contracts. They have lost money because of this policy, but feel it has helped them filter out artists to find their most worthwhile relationships and projects.

After their first show, Reed and Moore decided to part ways with their current clients. They had no idea what would come next for them. To acquire additional business, they chose to give out free tracks to artists. Anyone could come in and record because Reed wanted to give local, new rappers a chance.

This is when Zane Dennison, “Zigga,” showed up in their studio and rapped songs “Rhythm of My Life” and a version of Wiz Khalifa and Curren$y’s “How Fly.” Reed said he “killed it.”

Mmusi Butandu’s entrance into the up-and-coming company was just as much of a coincidence. Butandu, “Bentley,” met Reed’s brother and expressed his ambition to become a rapper. As soon as could be arranged, Bentley was flaunting his skills for Reed and Moore just as Zigga had.

The producers knew instantly that both Zigga and Bentley had “it” and adopted them as the new face for their company. This is when Reed and Moore developed the concept BIZ as a brand and started producing merchandise associated with it and their new artists. Being “about your BIZ” is the “movement of living out your dreams,” Reed says. When Zigga and Bentley tell their stories, they make it clear how just they exemplify this.

“It’s just my life,” Zigga says. “Every song that I write is an inspiration in the moment.”

He explains that this is why rap is a harder genre to be involved in. Where many genres of music may express different emotions throughout their songs, rap audiences have a short attention span and an artist has maybe three minutes to get one emotion out.

“That’s why a lot of people don’t finish their songs. They don’t feel the same way the next day,” Zigga says.

Zigga has a lot from his past and day-to-day life to draw on. Born in Iowa, he lived in Oakland, Calif., from the ages of 5 to 12. During this period of his life, he played coronet, was in the band at his elementary school and composed poetry. The first song he ever wrote, he recalls, was on Fresno Avenue at his landlord’s house. It was called “Falling Down to Earth.”

At 12, Zigga moved to Utah with his father. Right when he moved here, he began to make music and rap. He says rapping was an “easy transition” from poetry. When his father decided to move back to California, Zigga was left here to make a name for himself.
Zigga’s inspirations include Jay-Z, Lil Wayne and Birdman, who he says has “passed into iconicism or whatever it is.”

Zigga’s already-released music includes the songs “Napalm” and “Ain’t Afraid.” In the near future, he will have an album that collaborates with the techno producing company Pretty Lights, called “Pretty Lights and Shifty Nights.” It will include his new material over Pretty Lights’ original songs.

Bentley’s story sounds similar to Zigga’s. The rappers agree that they are able to connect as a result of their past and their music.

“I swear I wrote my first rap around [the age of] 9 or 10. It was about ‘Why do all the girls love me? Is it the cars, is it the money?’ And this is coming from a 9-year-old who knows nothing,” Bentley says. His mother thought it was a phase that was funny, but he has proved rap is a lasting part of his life.

At 15, he and his family moved to Utah because his mother got a contract to work as an obstetrician. He says he didn’t always live in the best situations or have “a good sense of family” because his mother was always at work or school.

Bentley says he sees Reed, Moore, Zigga and the rest of the Elm crew as his family and appreciates the chance that they have given him. They have helped him to “make it on the stage, on the mic.” Bentley is featured on many of Zigga’s tracks including “Motivation,”  which is a remix of the original song by artist Kelly Rowland. He will be releasing more of his own tracks very soon.

Even though Bentley and Zigga are still working on their repertoire, they have already performed on the stage. Reed and Moore produced their first concert with the rappers on June 11, 2011. They opened for the well-known artist the Ying-Yang Twins.

“I was tripping out,” Zigga says. “I wasn’t nervous, though, that’s the thing. It was like winning an award, like an acceptance speech.” The show was well-attended and is considered a success by the whole crew.

Working altogether, Zigga and Bentley create music, while Reed and Moore continue to establish their company and brand. Their collective goal? To make it big. All four of them have been working with Capitol Records and have a clear view of what steps they need to take to become the next big names in the hip-hop industry. Because for them, rapping is their BIZ.

UCLA evaluates people for trustworthiness of the Internet

2096 respondents answered questions about online use in a UCLA survey.

The Center for Communication Policy at the University of California evaluated what users do online, how they use and trust the Internet, how the Internet affects communication patterns and what social and psychological effects ensue.
‘’Historically, Americans have been quite concerned about their privacy,”says Jeffery Cole, the director of the center for communication policy at the University of California.
“But those concerns focused on government intrusion in their lives. Concerns about privacy are quite different and focus directly on perceptions of private companies collecting information and tracking our movements on the Internet,” added Cole The center organized the World Internet Project, and the National Science Foundation is the sponsor of the project. The report is part of a multilayer study of how the Internet is affecting American behavior and attitudes.
It shows that:
•    More than two-thirds of Americans have some type of access to the Internet.
•     More than 54.6 percent use email.
•     51.7 percent of Internet users make purchases online.
•    Nearly two-thirds of users (66 percent) and nearly half of nonusers (49.3 percent) believe that new communication techniques have made the world a better place.

There were 2,096 respondents to the study and the respondents were Internet users and nonusers.

The Employees Behind Black Friday

Story by Kylee Mecham

Black Friday is known as the biggest shopping day of the year.  It is a day filled with big deals and big savings for everyone.  However, for employees of retail stores, Black Friday is a day filled with frustration.
Due to consumer demand for more deals, Black Friday is starting to spill over on to Thursday over the past few years.  Many stores now open at midnight on Friday.  Some stores, such as Walmart and Old Navy are even open on Thanksgiving Day with the hope of getting more sales.
24-year old Grace Fahrer has worked at 5 different retail stores, and at the moment is an associate at Victoria Secret’s.  “I’ve been working in retail since I was 16-years old, and since then I have never had the chance to enjoy the Thanksgiving weekend with my family,” said Fahrer.
Christina Burris, manager of a Banana Republic store, understands how stressful Black Friday can be for all of her employees. Every year, she has employees begging her for the day after Thanksgiving off.  “Just like my employees, I wish I could spend my Thanksgiving weekend with family, but due to the publics demands I need everyone’s help over the holiday,” said Burris.
Jade Anderson Gill, an employee at Walmart, just worked her first Black Friday.  Gill said, “I always loved to go shopping on Black Friday with my friends and family, but now that I’ve been on the other side of it, I don’t think I’ll ever want to go out shopping on Black Friday again.”
Since Walmart’s sales started at ten o’clock, Gill was required to be at the store at 9 o’clock on Thanksgiving night.  She had to cut her time with her family short in order to get enough sleep for her work shift that lasted until four in the morning.
This year some employees’ complaints caught the attention of the nation.  It all started when Anthony Hardwick decided to take a stand against one of the largest retail stores, Target.
Hardwick, a Target employee in Omaha, Nebraska, started a petition called “Tell Target To Save Thanksgiving,” on http://www.change.org.
According to Hardwick, “All Americans should be able to break bread with loved ones on Thanksgiving!  A midnight opening robs the hourly and in-store salary workers of time off with their families on Thanksgiving Day.”
Over 200,000 people had signed Hardwick’s petition by Nov 24.
In a press release, Target defended its choice to open earlier.  “We have heard from our guests that they want to shop Target following their Thanksgiving celebrations rather than only having the option of getting up in the middle of the night,” said Molly Snyder, a spokeswoman for Target.
Hardwick and his stand against Target inspired over 150 other petitions on http://www.change.org asking other major retailers, such as Walmart, Kmart, Best Buy and Old Navy, to put employees and families first.
In response to the petition, Fahrer said, “I hope that retailers will consider us workers more when it comes to next year’s Thanksgiving weekend.”
